LAOS DESTINATION HIGHLIGHTS

The most popular time to visit Laos is between November and February. There is little rain but the rivers are high and the weather isn’t too hot. The Lao rainy season runs from May to October. April is very hot and can be very smoky due to farmers burning back. On the upside, April brings Lao New Year—the party to end all parties.

Located on the majestic Mekong River, Vientiane (translated as ‘sandalwood city’) dates from the 10th century, but has been the capital of Laos from the early 16th century to the present. Vientiane is a relatively small laid-back city, with tree lined boulevards, French colonial architecture and old Buddhist temples to discover.

This most charming city in all of Southeast Asia was the capital of the first Lao kingdom (Lan Xang – land of the million elephants) from 1353 onwards. Set at the confluence of two rivers that almost surround the town, and beneath a temple-topped hill, Luang Prabang is a wonderful patchwork of traditional Lao wooden houses and hints of European architecture.

It is a ruined Khmer temple located at the base of mount Phu Kao, in the Champasak province. The Hindu temple date from the 11th to 13th centuries. Wat Phu is small compared with the Angkor Wat in Cambodia but the tumbledown pavilions, enigmatic crocodile stone and tall trees that shroud much of the site give Wat Phu a mystical atmosphere.

The Plain of Jars is a large area extending around the town of Phonsavan, where huge jars of unknown origin are scattered around the landscape. The stone jars appear in clusters, ranging from a single or a few to several hundred jars. The jars vary in height and diameter between 1 and 3 meters and are all hewn out of rock.
